Google acts the same way as other search engines like Bing from Microsoft, this video by Matt Cutts from Google explains exactly what happens when you type what you want in the search box on google.co.uk and the process that kicks off the moment you hit the enter button on your keyboard.
As you can see, it is an excellent way of demonstrating what goes on. There are a number of things you can do which are relatively inexpensive to make sure Google know all about your company and the products and/or services you offer.
