Everyone wants to be at the top, not just in Google but in life but let's just focus on Google for now.
Google use lots of ranking factors to determine what sites appear at the top and when, we are going to cover some of this off below.
1) Getting To The Top - Guaranteed
This is actually easier than you think. You simply use Pay Per Click to get you there (This means paying Google money). This is where you bid for clicks to your website based on a pre determined set of keywords and when someone searches for your keyword they go to your website. You sign up (free of charge) to Google Adwords and follow their instructions on how to setup campaigns to get your website to the top.

- It can be is complicated if you do not understand the concept
- It is easy to get it wrong
- If you get it wrong, you will suffer financially!

2) Other things you can do that will help
Touching on ranking factors now, let's look at some things you can do to positively influence your ranking in Google:
Domain Name (This is a ranking factor)
If you sell books then you may want to think about having a domain name like "wesellbooks.co.uk" or something similar, what we are basically saying is that if you can get your keyword into your domain then this is great. It is not always possible to do this, Tesco could not do this, neither can John Lewis but you might be able to.
Meta Title (This is an seo page signal)
Make sure that your website allows you to update the meta title, this is the top level description that appears on your website page and also in Google's search results. Keep this relevent but not spammy. Example: "We Sell Books - Free UK Delivery - 1000s of titles in stock"
Keyword Stuffing (This is not cool)
Ensure you do not repeat your keyword over and over again on your page. This is bad, Google do not like it, users do not like it and you will be penalised eventually.
Image Optimisation (This is good practice)
If you have photos on your website think about optimising them, when we say optimising we are talking about reducing the file size and ensuring they load quickly for the user.
Contact Page (This is good practice)
If you have a contact page make sure you have lots of contact options available for your user. Make sure you add your company name, address, company registration number (if you are uk registered), telephone, contact email, opening times (if applicable).
Update Your Website (Freshness Factor)
Ensure your website is kept up to date regularly. Try and make it at least once per week. If you can't think of anything to say once a week then you need to speak to a company like Pebble who can help you.
Social Networking (Social Signals)
If you are on social networks (Facebook & Twitter) this is fantastic. You must ensure you use them. The amount you Tweet is believed to be a ranking factor and Facebook Shares are also believed to be a ranking factor (shares are stronger than likes).
It is easy to get hung up on gearing your website towards Google but you have to think the other way around. You should always think about the user. Think about what information the user needs to see, look at your website and ask yourself these questions:
1) Does this company offer what I am looking for?
2) Can I see their products/services
3) Can I see their location?
4) Can I see their contact details?
These are just a few items but we think you get the idea.
REMEMBER - Think about your customers, not Google. Google will reward you for this.
