We have all heard of the term “marketing” and we all know we need to do it. Gone are the days of businesses surviving through word of mouth alone, even the biggest players in the world (Google, Microsoft, Apple etc) rely heavily on marketing whether it is on TV or Online.

We have rounded up some of the best ways to market your business, and best of all, they are all free.

Facebook
without doubt, the most popular social networking platform on the planet, Facebook gives your business the opportunity to reach out to thousands of potential new customers with very little effort, you just need to spend a little time getting your page right and utilising the tools available.

Twitter
Twitter is what is known as a micro-blogging platform, if you you can get your message across in less than 160 characters (you can include links to your website as well and add links to photos and video) Twitter is a great place to talk and connect with like minded businesses and potential customers. Also we recommend following your competitors on Twitter (if they have an account) just to keep an eye on what they are doing.

Local listing websites/directories
These types of sites are plenty, think of a local version of yell.com. we have one locally called the Peterborough Business Directory, businesses can add themselves for free allowing them to be seen from a website other than their own. From an SEO point of view it also gets you an all important backlink to your website.

Press releases
If you have something good to say about your business you cannot rely on others to spread the word, send out press releases to your local press, there are also plenty of websites to post your press release on including free press release, pr log and 24/7 press release. You can add your press release for free and they will also distribute your press release onto the major search engines

Video
You may not be able to create a gangam style viral video to drive new customers to your website but what you can do is create how-to videos for your products and services, posting these videos on popular platforms like You Tube will reap rewards and increase your social media stature.
