I think unless you were living on another planet you would have heard Google championing through the use of "HTTPS Everywhere" for most of 2014. Google are basically saying that all websites should use https (a secure method of visiting a website).
This means that instead of your website URL looking like "http://www.pebbleltd.co.uk" it would look like "https://www.pebbleltd.co.uk". If you decide you want to do this then Google will reward your website by pushing it up in the search results.
Here is the official quote from Google:
"Over the past few months we’ve been running tests taking into account whether sites use secure, encrypted connections as a signal in our search ranking algorithms. We’ve seen positive results, so we’re starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal. For now it's only a very lightweight signal—affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content—while we give webmasters time to switch to HTTPS. But over time, we may decide to strengthen it, because we’d like to encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web."
At the end of the day security is important for everyone who uses the Internet, both developers and website visitors.
Here are some simple questions and answers on what this means to you and your customers/visitors:
For The User (visitors to your website)
This is great, if they visit a secure website and they login or submit their details via a form then the data they submit is fully encrypted and cannot be intercepted. This is similar to when you purchase goods online or login to your Internet banking. If it wasn't secure then you wouldn't do it on those types of websites.

For The Website Owner
How do I know if I need a secure website?
If you capture customer information on your website we recommend you have an SSL certificate installed. It is very low cost and will encrypt all data that users enter into your website, as well as this, Google have announced they will reward secure websites (as above).
How long does it take to make my website secure?
If you have a website with Pebble we can install an SSL certificate and have you all secure within 48 hours. There may be a little work to be done on your website itself but this would be very small.
How much does it cost?
This would depend on what where your website is hosted. Speak to Pebble and we can give you a price straightaway. Contact us on 01733 367799 or send us an email via our contact form.
What is the Return On Investment For This?
We understand that spending additional money is never very nice. If you were looking for a boost in search engine rankings then this would easily out weigh the cost of a secure certificate. As well as this, making your website secure will drive both additional traffic/customers to your website and, more importantly protect current and potential customer data.
